Caprese Salad (Italy)

Cooking Time: 5 minutes

The Caprese Salad is a simple, yet elegant dish that originates from the island of Capri in Italy, hence the name. It's a celebration of fresh, high-quality ingredients that come together to highlight the Mediterranean flavors. Whether served as an appetizer, side dish, or even a light main course, it's a timeless recipe that never fails to impress!

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 4 large ripe tomatoes, sliced

  • 250g fresh mozzarella (preferably buffalo mozzarella), sliced

  • 1 bunch fresh basil leaves

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze (optional)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the tomatoes and mozzarella

  • Slice the tomatoes and mozzarella into even rounds, about 1/4-inch thick. Arrange them alternately on a large platter, layering tomato, mozzarella, and basil leaves.

Season the salad

  • Drizzle the olive oil evenly over the top of the salad. If you like a bit of sweetness and tang, drizzle the balsamic glaze over it as well.

Add salt and pepper

  • Sprinkle the salad with salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.

Garnish

  • Finish by scattering a few more fresh basil leaves on top for a burst of color.

Serve

  • Serve immediately as a light appetizer or side dish.
